On Sunday, March 2, the 97th edition of the Academy Awards saw a new milestone take place at the Dobly Theater in Los Angeles. Over the years, the Oscars have had some Latino community representatives nominated and winners throughout its history. Zoe Saldaña won an Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her perfomance in Emilia Pérez.

Fortunately this year, the Dominican Republic is one of the countries that has stood out at the Oscar Awards with Saldaña’s win.

Zoe Saldaña gave an emotional acceptance speech in which she mentioned her grandmother who emigrated to the United States in the 1960s. The actress of Dominican origen thanked her sister and used both English and Spanish to accept the award.

Dominicans who have succeeded in Hollywood

The Dominican Republic has sent some stars to Hollywood. Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldaña, and Michelle Rodríguez have roots on the island.

In addition, some stars born in the Dominican Republic include Algenis Pérez Soto, who appeared in the Captain Marvel movie, which stars Brie Larson. Soto played Captain Atlas, a member of Starforce in the Marvel Studios movie.

Another famous Dominican actress taking Hollywood by storm is Wendy Regalado, who won the Best Actress award for her film Jenni at the Hollywood Blood Horror Festival in Los Angeles, California.
