Thanks to a sensational year on our screens, Gascón was present at the Cannes Film Festival Award where she won the Best Actress award, along with three female co-stars, becoming the first transgender actress to win the prize. She also took home the European Film Award for Best Actress.

Gascón grew up in Spain before moving abroad to work in London and Milan, where she found roles behind the camera. She then had various minor roles in Spain across a number of domestic series, but Mexico was her watershed moment after performances in “Corazón salvaje” (2009), “El señor de los cielos” (2013) and “Nosotros, los Nobles” (2013).

It was in 2018, after completing most of her gender transition and moving back to Spain, when Gascón released a memoir entitled Karsia, Una historia extraordinaria (Karsia: An Extraordinary Story). The book, named in honour of her birth name, was the first public declaration of her new identity.

On her transition, Gascón told the Golden Globes that she made this decision “while I was in Mexico at the age of 46, a short time ago, and it was because I already needed it... I said ‘I do it now or I never do it.’

I have always known what I was and what I wanted to do but there was no opportunity to do it because I had developed in a different way... I decided that it was the only moment I had or it was that or never, I decided to make a watershed in my life and I did it more because it was the time since there was a gender identity unit in Spain that supported me wonderfully because if not, I wouldn’t have done that.”

The actress is married to Marisa Gutiérrez, and the couple have a child together. They met in a nightclub when Gascón was 19, and Gutiérrez a year younger.
