The Academy Award for Best International Feature Film, formerly known as the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, is awarded annually to the most outstanding film of the year which has a predominantly non-English dialogue track. The prize was first awarded in 1956, although an honorary award was earlier presented from 1947 onwards.

What requirements must a film meet to be considered for International Feature Film?

In order to qualify for the Best International Feature Film category, potential contenders must meet four requirements.

  • For the 2025 Oscars, they had to be released in their country of origin between 1 November 2023 and 31 September 2024.
  • At least half of the dialogue must be in a language other than English.
  • The production must be financed by companies or foundations outside the United States.
  • They must be screened in cinemas for a minimum of seven consecutive days.
