Update:

I don’t know what you do for a living, but I reckon that if you or I signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension last Tuesday, we too would both be feeling “grateful”.

Therefore, it’s no surprise that ‘grateful’ was the word Brock Purdy used when asked about how he felt regarding his contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers.

Purdy himself admitted that he wasn’t sure how - or if at all - negotiations would work out with the Golden State franchise, but it sure enough did, and he put pen to paper on a contract that saw him move into seventh on the list of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

‘My job is to win games and lead this team’

“Being here day one was a huge emphasis for me, regardless of having a contract done or not,” Purdy revealed. “But I had a lot of faith in my agent and the Niners that we were going to get something done. I didn’t know when exactly, but being here for phase one was huge for me.”

Purdy told local media that he thought the two parties ended up “exactly where we needed to be” regarding the numbers, adding that he was “extremely happy with where we ended and I know the Niners are, too.”

“However they use the cap space and all that kind of stuff, that’s not my job”, Purdy explained. “My job is to now go and win games and lead this team, but I’m extremely happy and grateful for where we ended.”

Last season, Purdy put up a 6-9 record across 15 starts in the NFL, putting up a disappointing 65.9% completion rate, while tossing 12 interceptions and getting sacked 31 times. The 49ers finished 4th in the NFC West, failing to qualify for the playoffs; Purdy generously opened up on the state of the squad and how he sees the project moving forward.

“We want to make sure that we’re working together with our organisation and setting up everybody for success,” Purdy said. “It’s not just for me to get all the money as much as I can, but also, hey, let’s surround yourself with a great team and players and a great locker room, and all those things mattered.”
