“Vendetta”: Former Cowboy questions Jerry Jones’ handling of George Pickens situation
Former Cowboy Patrick Crayton suggested Jerry Jones may have a personal issue with George Pickens’ agent amid ongoing contract uncertainty.

Contract standoffs are a common part of NFL life, especially for high-profile players. But the situation surrounding Dallas Cowboys wideout George Pickens has taken on a more personal tone this week as questions continue to swirl about why a long-term deal hasn’t materialized.
Pickens is currently playing under the franchise tag, a short-term arrangement that guarantees elite-level pay for one season but does not offer long-term security. While the tag keeps him on the field in Dallas, it also effectively pauses any commitment beyond the current timeframe, something many players view as a warning sign rather than a reward.
Is Jerry holding back Pickens? Ex-Cowboy makes bold claim
Former Cowboys receiver Patrick Crayton recently addressed that dynamic directly, suggesting it reflects hesitation from the organization.
“It’s almost like there’s no intentions to get a long-term deal… that’s already key right there when they’re telling you that,” Crayton said on the DLLS podcast.
From there, Crayton escalated his comments, introducing a far more controversial angle involving team owner Jerry Jones.
“I’m not going to lie, Mr. Jones probably do have a vendetta against Mulugheta, his agent,” Crayton added.

The agent in question, David Mulugheta, is one of the most influential representatives in the NFL, handling a roster of elite talent across multiple teams and high-value contracts.
While this would not be the first time Jerry’s personal feelings got in the way of negotiations, Crayton’s thoughts come from a specific incident - last year’s drama with linebacker Micah Parsons.
Parsons is also represented by Mulugheta, the same agent now tied to George Pickens. In Parsons’ case, contract negotiations with Dallas became increasingly strained during the 2025–26 offseason. Reports at the time indicated friction over how talks were being handled, including Jones’ preference to engage directly rather than negotiate strictly through Mulugheta, which led to a breakdown in trust between the sides.
Parsons eventually held out, the situation escalated through training camp, and the relationship deteriorated to the point where Dallas opted to move him in a blockbuster 2025 trade to the Green Bay Packers, ending his tenure with the Cowboys despite his status as one of the franchise’s cornerstone defensive players.
Their shared representation has inevitably resurfaced in the discussion around Pickens, with Crayton’s comments drawing a direct line between past negotiations involving Mulugheta and the current lack of a long-term deal for another of his clients. Still, there is no public indication that Pickens’ situation is being driven by anything other than roster strategy and cap management.
Beyond speculation, there are also straightforward football and financial realities at play. Pickens arrived in Dallas with some questions about maturity stemming from his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and while his talent is not in doubt, those concerns reportedly factored into how teams evaluated his market.
Complicating matters further is the Cowboys’ existing financial commitment to CeeDee Lamb, who is already on a top-of-the-market receiver deal. Locking in another expensive extension at the same position would significantly tighten Dallas’ salary cap flexibility moving forward.
For now, the Cowboys remain committed to the franchise tag approach with Pickens. But as long as a long-term deal remains unresolved, questions about why it hasn’t happened, and whether it’s business or something more personal, are unlikely to go away anytime soon.
