A breakdown of Erling Haaland’s Premier League goals record: hat-tricks, penalties, left foot, right foot, headers…

The Manchester City striker hit 35 Premier League goals in the 3-0 win over West Ham, breaking Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s record.

Erling Haaland is world's best athlete

At one point earlier in the season, it looked as if Erling Haaland would break the Premier League single-season goalscoring record well before 3 May. The Manchester City striker surpassed Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s tallies of 34 league goals in his team’s 3-0 win over West Ham United, scoring the Sky Blues’ second with a clinical finish after being set through on goal by Jack Grealish. While Shearer and Cole posted their numbers in 42 and 40 matches respectively, Haaland’s have come in just 31 appearances (1.13 goals per game).

How often does Erling Haaland score?

The Norwegian has played 2,502 Premier League minutes so far this season, which works out at a goal every 71.5 minutes. If we add his seven assists into the mix, that’s a goal contribution every 59.6 minutes.

A breakdown of Erling Haaland’s Premier League goals record: hat-tricks, penalties, left foot, right foot, headers…

Haaland’s 35 goals have come from just 108 shots, 56 of which have been on target. 32.4% of all of his efforts on goal have ended in the back of the net, while you have to spare a thought for poor old Premier League goalkeepers, who have seen 62.5% of the City’s shots on target fly past them.

Haaland’s lethal left foot

Of the 35, 23, including the record-breaking goal against the Hammers, have been scored with his left foot, with which he has scored seven penalties. Haaland has found the net six times with his ‘weaker’ right foot and another six with his head.

Haaland’s hat-trick records

The former Borussia Dortmund hitman has also set a number of hat-trick records this season, including becoming the first player to score a treble in three successive home matches, the fastest player to score three Premier League hat-tricks (in only eight games, smashing Michael Owen’s previous record by 40) and the fastest to four (in 19 appearances; 46 games fewer than former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy).

In addition to his four hat-tricks, Haaland has scored a double on five occasions, while finding the net once a further 13 times. All in all, he has netted in 22 of his 31 Premier League appearances. The attacker has scored against all of the clubs he has faced, with the exception of Chelsea and Brentford, who City still have to play in the final few weeks of the season.

What is all the all-time record in England’s top flight?

While Haaland now holds the record for the most single-season goals in a 38-game season, there is no chance of him catching the all-time English top-flight record. In the 1927-28 campaign, which was played over 42 matches, Everton’s Dixie Dean incredibly scored 60 goals, a tally which will surely never be beaten. Dean also holds the record for most hat-tricks in the top tier of English soccer (30) and the most in one season (eight). Whether Haaland stays at City long enough to break the former seems unlikely, although he will surely be aware of the latter.
