Chivas vs América Liga MX: Who has more wins in the Clásico Nacional?

This weekend Chivas Guadalajara welcome Club América to the Akron Stadium for Mexico’s Clásico Nacional, with just a point between the nation’s two most successful sides.

Chivas have been in strong form in recent weeks, winning four of their last five Liga MX fixtures and boast one of the tightest defences in the league. However they have struggled for goals of late, with midfielder Víctor Guzmán their current top scorer with five goals.

In stark comparison, América are the league’s highest scoring team after 11 game weeks and boast one of the most potent forwards in Henry Martín. The 30-year-old has bagged 10 goals in 11 matches during Liga MX Clausura and will look to add to that tally against the old rivals.

Súper Clásico: overall H2H tally

Both teams will be desperate for the win to close the gap on league leaders Moterrey, but there is also the question of where they each stand in their overall head-to-head rivalry.

Chivas may be a point ahead in the Clausura, but it is América who have the edge in historic terms. In 246 meetings since the early 1940s - including 38 friendlies - América have accrued 90 wins to Guadalajara’s 77, while there have been 79 draws.

América get the better of Chivas on the big stage

Notably, América have made a habit of beating Chivas when it has really mattered: in 13 two-legged clashes in the Mexican league playoffs, the men from Mexico City have been aggregate winners 10 times. The most famous of those playoff ties - indeed, the clubs’ most famous meeting full stop - was the 1983/84 league final, dubbed by the Mexican media as the ‘Final of the Century’. América’s 5-3 aggregate triumph clinched the fourth of their total of 13 national championships - a tally that also puts them ahead of Guadalajara, who have 12.

There have also been four Súper Clásicos at the semi-final stage of the league playoffs, with two aggregate wins apiece. Most recently, América triumphed 2-0 over two legs in the last four of the Apertura 2016, a victory that earned them revenge for Chivas’ 2-0 aggregate win at the same stage of the Apertura 10 years earlier.

Other major meetings between the teams include two Mexican Cup final clashes in 1954 and 1955, both won by América, and a CONCACAF Champions’ Cup first-round tie in 1985, which also brought victory for Los Azul-Cremas. Thirteen years later, the clubs again met in international competition, having both qualified for the Copa Libertadores after Mexican teams were invited to take part in South America’s elite continental club tournament for the first time. Continuing the pattern of América beating Chivas on the biggest stage, the capital club won home and away (2-0 and 1-0) when they were paired together in the group stage.

Over the past decade results between the two sides have been fairly even, with a recent eight-year streak without consecutive victories for either team. However that run came to an end last year when América beat Chivas home and away to secure a famous double.

The second of those wins, a 3-1 América victory at Chivas’ Akron Stadium, came courtesy of two second-half goals from Jonathan Dos Santos and Jurgen Damm. With that victory América are now unbeaten against the fiercest rivals in the last five fixtures between the two sides.
