England vs USWNT: How many people attended the match? What is the record for women’s soccer?
The eagerly anticipated friendly between the European and world champions was always going to fill Wembley stadium in London.
The two women’s teams representing England and the United States have drawn a magnificent crowd to create an atmosphere at the famous Wembley stadium in London befitting such a contest.
These are not just two proud teams looking to have bragging rights across the pond and continue their preparations towards next year’s World Cup (tickets are already on sale), but these are the reigning European and world champions. As Sarina Wiegman, coach of the Lionesses said when the game was confirmed, it is “the perfect game”.
England vs USWNT: an attractive proposition
Even before kick-off, it was clear that there were going to be a lot of eyes watching the action unfold in front of them, in what was a sold-out event. And the distant viewing figures were expected to be sizeable too.
Did England vs USWNT set a new record attendance?
Back when this fixture was announced, the England players, and most of the country, were still on an incredible high after beating Germany to lift the Women’s Euro 2022 title. That final drew a record crowd of 87,192, surpassing any previous European Championship game attendance, including from the men’s competition.
Tonight’s official count is 76,893, meaning it HASN’T beaten the previous attendance record in this competition. And it comes in behind the all-time record for a women’s game, which we saw when FC Barcelona Femení (Spain) and VfL Wolfsburg (Germany) played in the Champions League at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain on 22 April 2022. That day the official stadium figure was 91,648.
Just as everyone was keen to see the showing of these two teams tonight, even more anticipation will follow them as we get closer to next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Both will hope to be competing in that showpiece final.
