Lamine Yamal looks to set another record in Champions League

Barcelona’s teenage star faces Atlético Madrid with history within reach, but tension lingers after a curious reaction last weekend.

Lamine Yamal stands on the brink of breaking yet another precocity record if he scores or assists this Wednesday at Spotify Camp Nou against Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Barcelona’s No. 10 is now targeting a mark currently held by Erling Haaland, one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.

Yamal has already recorded five goals and four assists in this season’s Champions League. If he contributes again against Atlético, he will become the youngest player ever to reach double digits in goal involvements in a single edition – at 18 years and 269 days. The current benchmark belongs to Haaland, who posted 10 goals and one assist in the 2019–20 campaign at 19 years and 212 days.

It would mark another milestone for the Rocafonda-born talent, who last Saturday left the Metropolitano visibly frustrated despite delivering a strong performance. He was decisive in forcing Nico’s red card just before halftime and struck the post, yet his mood at full time drew attention.

The reasons behind that frustration remain unclear. Hansi Flick, whose handshake was brushed aside by the player as he left the field and who also noted Yamal did not celebrate Robert Lewandowski’s goal – one that gave Barcelona a seven-point cushion at the top – downplayed the situation afterward. “We were in the locker room and everything is fine,” Flick said, attempting to close the matter.

Still, the image sparked speculation. Some pointed to a possible disagreement with teammates, others to exchanges with Atlético players, or even irritation at constant instructions from the German coach’s staff. None have been confirmed.

Yamal, currently Barcelona’s second-leading scorer in the competition behind Fermín, tends to rise on nights like this. And against Atlético, with the stakes at their highest, he has another record within reach.
