Rayados fans are still in shock with the signing of Spain international Sergio Canales. The 32-year-old joined on a deal reportedly worth around $10 million from LaLiga side Betis. The midfielder made 31 league appearances for the Verdiblancos last season, 28 of them in the starting XI and scored four goals and played a part in another three.

In an interview with Liga MX, Canales spoke about why he agreed to come to Mexico, his expectations with Rayados as well as many other topics.

How are you facing the challenge of coming to a new country Mexico and playing in a different league, the Liga MX?

“Well, it is a very important challenge in my career. I have a lot of ambition, a lot of desire. I had been looking for a change for a long time to play outside of Europe and I considered that now was the probably the best time to do it with my family. I’ve come here with a lot of desire to achieve great things ”.

Several great Spanish soccer players have passed through Mexico, what legacy would you like to leave in our country?

“I think I want, as I have always said, to do my best, not to leave anything along the way, not to regret if I ever leave here, of not having done something. I am going to give my best and I believe that this is how great things and successes are achieved”.

What point in your career do you feel you are at?

“I think that I am in the best moment of my career, every year I have felt better, more intelligent. I understand the game better. I’m just at the moment when I can take another leap in quality. Life is about experiences and I am sure that Rayados will be one of the greatest of my life”.

What did Andrés Guardado tell you about the Liga MX?

“Well, the truth is that he spoke very highly about it. He told me that there are quality players. It’s true that we don’t tend to get much overage of the Liga MX in Spain, due to the issue of kick-off times, but he told me it’s a great league. As did Héctor Moreno, who encouraged
me a lot to be ambitious - to try to win things and that, there are players of great quality and good football”.

What did you think of Monterrey as a city and the club’s infrastructure?

“Rayados is a big club, that’s pretty obvious. With the people who work here, there is a very high human value, something that seems fundamental to me in any job and the team has a lot of ambition - it’s eager to achieve things. The fans have shown me a lot of affection since I arrived and I am very grateful for that”.

What are those objectives that you set for yourself individually and collectively with Rayados?

“Win as many titles as possible, enjoy the experience and make the fans enjoy themselves”.
