Update:

The news of Kylian Mbappé’s injury hit Real Madrid fans like a soggy dish cloth across the face. "Have it, another one", said whatever temporary Football God has been twiddling with the knobs and levers that control the Beautiful Game over the past two seasons that have seen Los Blancos go without a trophy.

The French forward, who has been central to anything positive that Madrid have managed to pull together this year, signalled to the bench that something was wrong in the closing stages of the eventual 1-1 draw with Real Betis. He was taken off shortly after by manager Álvaro Arbeloa, having appeared uncomfortable following a sprint.

The initial diagnosis suggests muscle overload in his hamstring rather than a tear, like what happened to Lamine Yamal, but no definitive timeline has been set. In other words, it could be minor, or it could become something that lingers.

There is also a wider concern that stretches beyond the Spanish capital. France are preparing for the World Cup this summer, and even a short-term injury could disrupt Mbappé’s rhythm heading into the competition. Injuries have not been entirely absent from his campaign, and as a result both teams will be monitoring him closely over the coming weeks, even if the domestic campaign is fizzing into nothingness like a dropped ice-cream on a sunny pavement.
