Atlético Madrid 0-3 Real Madrid: full-time summary

Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed a hat-trick as Real Madrid produced an impressive display at the Vicente Calderón to see off city rivals Atlético Madrid on Saturday.

Real stretch gap at head of LaLiga

After Barcelona's earlier draw with Málaga, Los Blancos' first league victory over Atlético since April 2013 saw them go four points clear at the top of LaLiga.

Cristiano free-kick puts guests in front

In the stadium's final derby - unless the sides meet in the cup or in Europe this term - Real were rewarded for their first-half dominance with the lead at the break.

Cristiano, who had not scored on his last five visits, fired a 23rd-minute free-kick that took a touch off Stefan Savic and went in past a wrong-footed Jan Oblak.

Oblak can't stop Cristiano's deflected free-kick from finding the corner.

Madrid make it 2-0 from 12 yards

Atlético took the game to Real after the restart but, having weathered the storm, Zinedine Zidane's men doubled their lead from the spot with 20 minutes left.

Savic was adjudged to have brought down Cristiano as the pair chased a long ball into Atleti's box, and the Portuguese sent Oblak the wrong way from the spot.

Ronaldo completes his treble

The points were safe in the 77th minute when the fantastic Isco played Gareth Bale through to lay the ball across goal for Ronaldo, who touched in from close range - and left Atlético nine points behind their near neighbours.

Here's how it happened:

Atlético Madrid 0-3 Real Madrid: second half

Peeep! It's all over at the Calderón! Real Madrid take the spoils in what is (likely to be) the last derby at the famous old ground!

Min 92 | Carrasco again! Gameiro slips it to the Belgian in the box, and he works himself room to shot from close range, but Navas blocks! And that's it!

Min 90 | Well well well, that would have been the goal of the night. Carrasco sets off on a Ricky Villa-esque weaving run between white shirt after white shirt, finally finding himself in a shooting position from around the penalty spot - but Nacho gets his head (or possibly his back) in the way! Just the two minutes of time added on.

Min 88 | Madrid come back at Atlético, Carvajal getting to the byline and cutting the ball back for the head of Modric...who nods it over! Could have been four.

Min 87 | Atleti win a free-kick for Koke to send in. It's headed clear, but only as far as Carrasco on the edge of the box, the winger firing a bouncing effort that Navas pads wide for a corner, which comes to nothing.

Min 86 | Third and final sub for the visitors as Vázquez is withdrawn for Marco Asensio. It's been an impressive night from Los Blancos.

Min 83 | A second substitution for Real, and it's the hat-trick hero who comes off to be replaced by James Rodríguez.

Min 80 | The ball's fed to Koke just inside the box and it's a shooting chance for the Spaniard, but it's blocked. Atleti then win another corner, which Griezmann overhead-kicks back into the box to find Godín in space...but the Uruguayan mishits his shot. It's fair to say the Calderón is stunned.

Min 79 | First change for Madrid, who take off Isco and bring on Karim Benzema.

Min 78 | Vázquez is booked for a challenge on Carrasco.

Min 77 | Goooooal to Real Madrid! Hat-trick for Cristiano Ronaldo! Madrid break through Bale, who steams forward down the left-hand channel, looks up and knocks it across goal for Ronaldo to push it home at the back post! Now he overtakes Di Stéfano!

Min 74 | Real appear to be heading for a first league win over their city rivals in seven games, then. Godín was booked for his protests after that penalty award, incidentally.

Min 72 | Carrasco looks to get one back right away, but shoots right down Keylor's gullet.

Min 71 | Gooooal! Cristiano sends Oblak the wrong way! 17 goals in 26 derby appearances for Ronaldo, and that equals Alfredo Di Stéfano's record!

Min 70 | Penalty to Real Madrid! Savic and Cristiano chase down a long ball and the Montenegrin tries to hook it clear but only succeeds in swiping at air, falling to the turf and appearing to bring Cristiano down...and the ref points to the spot!

Min 69 | Real look to have weathered the Atleti storm.

Min 68 | Carrasco shoots... Navas gathers. Real go up the other end, and Isco goes close! The ball is headed clear by a red and white shirt, and drops to the former Málaga man to ping a volley down towards Oblak's right-hand corner from just outside the box. The keeper gets down to turn it wide.

Min 63 | Koke and Cristiano both get booked for a spot of antler-rutting handbags at dawn.

Min 61 | Double change for Atlético, as Gabi and Torres come off for Correa and Kevin Gameiro.

Min 58 | Madrid win a free-kick on the right....but Bale heads Modric's delivery over! I can't keep up with this start to the second half. Simeone is preparing to bring on Ángel Correa.

Min 57 | Real come back at the home side. First Modric almost slips Ronaldo (I think) in, before Isco crosses dangerously towards the Portuguese, but he can't his head on it. Dani Carvajal then fires it back in low, but Atleti get it clear.

Min 54 | Nacho blocks from Griezmann, before Atlético win another corner. It's been all Atleti so far. Koke fires it in menacingly, Real just about clear. It comes back to Koke, Real just about clear again. I suspect the hosts got a bit of rocket from Simeone at half time.

Min 51 | Griezmann again! Modric loses out to the Frenchman inside his own half, and the striker doesn't need a second invitation to slap a 25-yard effort at Navas' goal, but the Costa Rican holds on!

Min 50 | Uffff! Atleti have begun this second 45 with the bit between their teeth. Koke slips in Griezmann with an angled ball into the box, and 'Le Petit Prince' looks up at the near post and thunders it across goal!

Min 48 | Atleti start on the front foot with a period of possession that sees the ball finally worked to Filipe Luis, whose cross is cleared for a corner. That initally comes to nothing, but the ball eventually comes to Carrasco in space for a shot - and the Belgian pings it towards the top corner and is just off target!

Min 46 | No subs for either side.

Peeep! We are back underway at the Calderón.

Atlético Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid: half-time summary

It's been a very watchable first half played at quite a pace, with Cristiano Ronaldo ending his scoring drought at the Calderón to see Real Madrid lead at the break - and deservedly so. Isco has been excellent and, but for an errant offside flag, might have got himself on the scoresheet. As things stand, Real will be stretching their advantage at the top of the table to four points, in doing so leaving Atlético nine back.

Atlético Madrid 0-1 Real Madrid: first half

Peeeeep! That's half time!

Min 44 | Bale scythes down Griezmann and has the home fans hollering for a yellow card. Just the free-kick, says Mr Fernández Borbalán. And it comes to precisely nought.

Min 43 | Torres and Varane are again involved as the striker swings it across and the Frenchman is in position to head clear. Atlético then get yet another ball into the mixer, but it's meat and drink for Keylor Navas.

Min 42 | Atleti win a corner on the left, but Koke's delivery is poor and fails to clear the first man. In the process of earning that corner, Torres felt he was fouled by Varane on the corner of the box, by the way.

Min 38 | Marcelo ventures forward and shoots right-footed, but it's deflected over for a Real corner, which comes to zippety-zip.

Min 36 | Atlético work it well on the right twice to get in crossing positions, but both times they're lacking the killer ball and the away side clear. Another look at that Isco offside says he was definitely on. A let-off for the hosts - he was through on Oblak.

Min 32 | Atlético win a free-kick on the left flank, and Koke sends it in. The ball comes out to Gabi, who pings it back at goal first time, but it hits a crowd of bodies and is cleared. Marcelo's long ball then finds Isco scuttling clear of the Atleti backline, but the midfielder is flagged offside. TV replays suggest he may have been on...

Min 31 | Almost two for Real! Just as I write that Cristiano eulogy, the Portugal captain nearly conjures up a lovely second for the visitors. Isco feeds Ronnie's run into the box with a neat little reverse ball, and the forward turns beautifully away from Diego Godín - but Oblak beats out his near-post effort!

Min 30 | Cristiano now has six goals in LaLiga this term, and eight in 13 in all competitions. For a man who's supposed to be having a bit of a ropey season, that isn't bad. Mind you, that opinion is coming from a man who scored nine in total in his three campaigns as his school first XI's centre-forward.

Min 28 | Nacho is down after a clash with Torres as Atlético get the ball into the area in search of an equaliser. He looks like he'll be OK, though.

Min 26 | Atleti captain Gabi is the first man into the book tonight after blocking off Modric. He manages to look aggrieved, but that was a fairly nailed-on yellow.

Min 24 | Varane has to be alert to clear a cross as Atlético look to strike back immediately from that goal, which - assuming it is finally given to him - is Cristiano's first in six at the Calderón.

Min 23 | Gooooooal to Real Madrid! Vázquez wins a free-kick in what I'm contractually obliged to describe to you as 'Ronaldo territory'. The Portuguese runs up, hits it - and the ball deflects off Stefan Savic - or was it Raphael Varane? - wrong-footing Oblak and finding the corner!

Min 20 | Isco wins a corner on the right, which is worked to Marcelo to whip in another threatening cross. Atleti deal with it, but it's then pin-balling around on the edge of their box before Bale gets a foot in to lay it off to Modic, who has a great shooting chance - and hits a low left-footed effort towards Oblak's far post. The keeper holds on, though.

Min 18 | The game's being played at a furious pace. Vázquez gets it out of his feet and crosses from the right, but it's far too long. Up the other end, Marcelo shows a nice little dose of sang-froid to get to Griezmann's through-ball before Torres and turn away from the former Liverpool man inside his own box.

Min 14 | It's been fun so far.

Min 12 | Goaa... no! What a save from Jan Oblak! Isco produces a lovely piece of skill and feeds Marcelo, who flights in a great ball to the back stick for Cristiano Ronaldo to bullet a header down towards the corner - but Oblak is down to keep it out! Gordon Banks-esque from the Slovenian there. Ronaldo is claiming it crossed the line anyway, but replays show it hadn't.

Min 9 | Now Koke dinks it in for Saúl Ñíguez running into the box in the left-hand channel, but the youngster - who knows a thing or two about scoring spectacular goals against Real - can't direct his volley on target.

Min 7 | Fernando Torres is almost in, but Nacho Fernández is there to get his foot in!

Min 6 | Luka Modric plays the corner short to Isco, who whips it in to the back post where a red and white shirt heads away. Atleti zip up the other end and win a free-kick on the left byline, which Yannick Carrasco fires in deliciously and Marcelo does well to clear from under the posts!

Min 4 | Real counter with their first attack of any substance, which eventually sees Isco cross to the back post and force Juanfran to concede a corner.

Min 3 | Bale brings down Juanfran on the right flank, and Atlético have a first opportunity to send into the box... Koke swings it in, but the visitors get it clear.

Min 1 | Real Madrid look to be lining up in slightly unexpected fashion, in a sort of 4-4-2 with Cristiano up top with Isco just behind him, and a midfield of Vázquez, Kovacic, Modric and Bale.

Peeeeeep! We are off!

Two mins to kick-off | Almost time now. Predictions? Here's what the AS Oracle reckons.

Three mins to kick-off | They have form for unfurling cracking huge banners in the Vicente Calderón, and tonight they have not disappointed. 'Our legacy will be eternal' reads a huge 'tifo' paying tribute to the ground that Atlético Madrid's home since 1966.

Atlético Madrid - Real Madrid: Confirmed line-ups

Atlético Madrid XI: Oblak; Juanfran, Savic, Godín, Filipe Luis; Saúl, Gabi, Koke, Carrasco; Griezmann, Torres

Real Madrid XI: Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Nacho, Marcelo, Kovacic, Modric, Isco, Vázquez, Cristiano, Bale

Atlético Madrid - Real Madrid: Latest news

20:39 | Atlético go into this evening's 'derbi madrileño' on the back of a spot of dicey league form, having lost two of their last three. However, they'll take heart from a league record of six in a row unbeaten against Los Blancos, since a home defeat way back in April 2013...

20:37 | Atleti and Real last met, of course, in May's Champions League final. Here's a look at how the sides have changed since then.

20:35 | Let the stat-attack continue: Real Madrid are 28 games unbeaten in all competitions, stretching back to their 2-0 Champions League defeat to Wolfsburg in April. And their last LaLiga reverse, you ask? Against tonight's opponents, back in February. That's Zidane's only league loss so far as Real boss.

20:30 | As we showed you earlier (13:58), Cristiano has been something of a sharp-shooting chap at the Calderón in the past - but right now 'CR7' is on a run of five games on the banks of the Rio Manzanares without a goal. Still has seven in ten visits, mind you.

20:25 | The Calderón derby head-to-head stands at 15 wins for Atlético, 28 for Real, and 22 draws. For Madrid to make it 29, they'll need to triumph on Los Rojiblancos' patch for the first time since February 2014 - nearly three years ago.

20:03 | Here's the full story on tonight's team news.

19:53 | There'll be some disappointed Atleti fans at that Ramos news, then...

19:52 | Atlético Madrid boss Diego Simeone makes just the one change to the side that lost to Real Sociedad last time out, as Kevin Gameiro makes way for Fernando Torres in attack. 'El Niño' starts alongside Antoine Griezmann, who - as expected - is fit to play despite suffering a foot injury on France duty just over a week ago.

19:46 | So, Zinedine Zidane has named his starting line-up for the final LaLiga derby at the Calderón. The main news is that Sergio Ramos is not fit enough to start despite recovering from a knee issue, with Nacho Fernández filling in alongside Raphael Varane, while striker Karim Benzema also begins on the bench after returning to contention from a hip problem. Lucas Vázquez starts in the Frenchman's stead, the Galician expected to play on the right-hand side of a front three featuring Cristiano Ronaldo in the middle and Gareth Bale on the left.

19:02 | Looking for some pre-match reading material? Here's AS editor Alfredo Relaño on tonight's clash...

18:00 | Tonight's is the 66th and - unless the sides meet in the Copa del Rey or Champions League this season - last Madrid derby at the Calderón. Here's a look at how the previous 65 have gone.

17:39 | Planning to visit Madrid or already here? Like sightseeing? Like running? If you've answered yes to all three questions then this is for you.

17:03 | We've just reached half time at the Camp Nou. No goals the home side looking a little short of ideas.

16:15 | Barca v Málaga underway. Robbie will take you through it...

15:22 | Atlético's stopper Oblak has been one of the keys to their defensive strength of recent time but, along with his defence, is struggling with dirty linen at the moment.

13:58 | He may not be at his best right now, but here's a little reminder of how devastating Cristiano Ronaldo can be at the Vicente Calderón. Will we ever see a virtuoso performance like that again from the ageing Portuguese?

13:21 | The last time these two city rivals met, of course, was in the Champions League final back in May. We take a look at how both sides have changed in terms of style and personnel since that day.

12:50 | Take a look at our review of the results history of this historic fixture. Tonight is the 66th meeting between the two at the Calderón, and it'll likely be their last.

11:58 | The fans have had their say, and they've picked Vazquez to start over Benzema tonight. Atleti supporters have also picked their preferred XI.

11:05 | Check out the form guide of both sides ahead of this evening's big kick off.

10:00 | Good morning sports fans! Stay with us all day as we bring you all the latest news and buildup ahead of the Madrid derby, which we'll also be covering live right here.

Atlético Madrid - Real Madrid: Match preview

The Madrid derby is without doubt the most mouthwatering tie of this post-international-break weekend. Real Madrid will set out to cement their position at the top of the table, while city neighbours Atlético Madrid can’t afford to slip even further behind in the title race.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid will welcome their eternal rivals to the Vicente Calderón in what is likely to be the last ever Madrid derby on the banks of Río Manzanares. Eight points off the top after two recent slip-ups, Los Rojiblancos will be looking up and down this evening – up to ensure they keep pace with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal and down to beat off the chasing pack of Sevilla and Real Sociedad, who are all vying for this year’s Champions League spots.

It has been a stop-start season so far for Simeone’s men and they are yet to truly hit upon a formula to build up a proper head of steam. In fact, this season’s constitutes Atlético’s worst start to a league campaign since ‘El Cholo’ took over in the 2011-12 season. Los Rojiblancos currently have 21 points out of a possible 30.

Simeone has been able to prepare for the derby with a full squad after the international break, with Lucas, Thomas, Filipe Luis, Correa, Godín, Giménez all returning unscathed. Another boost is the availability of Antoine Griezmann, who was touch and go after sustaining a foot injury in France’s game against Sweden.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid travel across the city for their biggest test of the season yet. Their record so far this campaign speaks for itself: eight wins and three draws, which sees them sitting pretty at the top of the table. However, these dizzy heights and title credentials will be severely testing by the snarl and bite of Simeone’s men.

Los Blancos are yet to properly convince this season. They have the numbers on their side, but rapidly went from near-record-breakers to a spluttering machine showing equal glimpses of brilliance and frailty. Clearly Zidane’s men are a force at home, and only Las Palmas have obstructed their march towards three points this season. The Calderón, however, poses its own set of challenges.

Zidane almost has a full squad to pick from, but with a few glaring absentees: Álvaro Morata, Toni Kroos and Casemiro, along with doubts surrounding Pepe and Benzema. Nevertheless, Sergio Ramos is set to make a return after training with the rest of the squad this week, and both Kovacic and Carvajal have recovered from knocks picked up whilst playing for Croatia and Spain respectively.
