Madrid, Atlético and Barça: €7.5 million on the European table
Uefa this season introduced a new system of bonus payments for the various Champions League qualifying stages, with the Spanish clubs cashing in.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético stand to earn 7.5 million euros apiece if they secure their passage to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Uefa has this season increased the amounts awarded to teams for progressing through the rounds of Europe’s elite club competition to a total of 1,268,900 euros.
Champions League earnings
For qualifying for the group stage each club is awarded 12.7 million euros, with a group stage win earning 1.5 million euros and a draw paying out at 500,000 euros. For reaching the round of 16 a club is paid six million euros and a last eight appearance coins 6.5 million, with 7.5 million handed to teams who appear in the semi-finals. The champion is paid 15.5 million euros and the runner-up 11 million: a total of 761.9 million euros in fixed amounts for participating clubs.
The remainder – 507 million euros – is placed into the market pool and distributed proportionally among clubs based on the television revenue generated by each participant.
In purely sporting terms, Real Madrid have earned 31.2 million euros in this season’s Champions League (three wins and three draws in the group stage) while Barça and Atlético have each been awarded 32.7 million (five wins and a draw in the group stage).
If Real Madrid go on to win the title for a second successive season the club will pocket 54.2 million euros, while Barça or Atlético would earn 55.7 million. As last season’s champions, Real were handed 53.5 million euros while losing finalists Atlético earned 47.5 million.
With income from the market pool included, Madrid last season trousered 94.1 million euros from the Champions League.
