Las Palmas president Miguel Ángel Ramírez saw his side relegated from Primera División last weekend after a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Alavés and matters for the businessman scarcely improved on Tuesday when an arrest warrant was issued in his name.

While the sparesly populated stands at the Estadio de Gran Canaria called on Ramírez to quit on Sunday, the chairman of the Grupo Ralons congolmerate was on a business trip in Miami and failed to appear in court in Las Palmas on Tuesday to answer allegations of defrauding the Spanish social security system. According to local daily La Provincia, the magistrate in charge of the investigation cited Ramírez’s “stubborn and rebellious” attitude towards the case when issuing the warrant.

Ramírez was expected to return to Las Palmas on Tuesday to make his court appearance, but he has been conspicuous by his absence as Las Palmas slipped inexorably into Segunda under the guidance of Paco Jémez. After calling those fans that have criticised his running of the club “traitors” Ramírez has been keeping a low profile and has reportedly not been seen around Gran Canaria for some weeks.
