Update:

A potential Achilles tear for Lillard - reported as the feared diagnosis by Chris Haynes – threatens to not only end his playoff run but to sideline the seven-time All-Star into next season. With the Bucks facing elimination against the Indiana Pacers, his absence could mark the beginning of major changes in Milwaukee.

What happened to Damian Lillard?

Seven minutes into Game 4, Lillard collapsed without contact, grabbing at his lower left leg. This is the same leg that recently cost him over a month due to a calf clot. He couldn’t put weight on it as he was helped off the court, leaving Bucks fans fearing the worst.

Early reports suggest a torn left Achilles tendon. While no official confirmation has come from the Bucks, the timeline for this kind of injury is bleak. A full Achilles rupture typically requires 9-12 months of recovery, meaning Lillard could miss most, if not all, of the 2025 season.

How bad is an Achilles tear?

For a player like Lillard, who relies heavily on burst and quickness, an Achilles tear can be a career-altering injury. At 34, turning 35 in July, he was already showing signs of physical wear. This could sap the explosiveness that made him one of the NBA’s elite guards.

If confirmed, Lillard’s return might not come until next spring, and even then, few players come back the same after this injury - especially guards his age. Kevin Durant managed to recover well from his Achilles rupture, but he’s one of the exceptions. It’s not just the Bucks praying for good news.

What Lillard injury means for the Bucks

Milwaukee is staring down its third straight first-round playoff exit. With Giannis Antetokounmpo unable to carry the team on his own this series, the Bucks have been overwhelmed by the deeper, faster Pacers, now leading 3-1.

If Game 5 in Indianapolis goes as expected, Lillard’s injury could be the first domino in a turbulent offseason. Giannis’ patience is reportedly wearing thin. Losing Lillard for most of next year may only fuel talk of an Antetokounmpo trade request.
