Confirmed India coronavirus cases
As of 05:00 IST (01:30 CEST) on Thursday 9 April, there had been 5,916 confirmed coronavirus cases and 178 deaths in India. 506 people in the country have recovered after contracting Covid-19.
Mumbai set to extend lockdown
India's financial hub Mumbai is set to extend lockdown measures until at least April 30 as authorities race to expand testing to stem the spread of coronavirus cases in the city, three senior officials said.
A 21-day nationwide lockdown that Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared in late March to fight the epidemic is officially set to end on April 14.
But Mumbai, with a population of more than 20 million, has become India's coronavirus epicentre. The metropolis and its suburbs have reported 782 positive cases and 50 deaths, the latest health bulletin said on Wednesday.
"In Mumbai cases are rising too fast. In just 24 hours 100 cases were reported on Tuesday," said a senior state government official, adding that the trend was alarming and an extension of the lockdown for at least another two weeks was necessary to stop the virus from spreading in one of the world's most densely populated cities.
Indian government issues Covid-19 hospital protocol
Meanwhile, the Indian government has issued a three-tier Covid-19 protocol at hospitals to streamline the treatment of coronavirus patients. The three categories are Covid Care Centres for mild cases, Covid Health Centres for moderate to serious cases and Dedicated Covid Hospitals for severe and critical patients.
The strategy has been in place after India’s largest city, Mumbai, declared that the Wockhardt hospital would be closed to new patients as it was to be used as a coronavirus containment zone.
AFP were told that three hundred members of staff had been quarantined after three doctors and 26 nurses tested positive for Covid-19.
