Jordan Mailata makes Super Bowl history

Jordan Maliata made history at Super Bowl LIX. Having featured in the Eagles' defeat to the Chiefs two years ago, he became the first Australian to win an NFL championship ring as Philly got their revenge in New Orleans. Before signing for the Eagles in 2018, he claims he only ever watched one NFL game a year - the Super Bowl.

Mahomes concussion?

There is a question swirling around in the after match of the Chiefs loss in Super Bowl LIX and it has to do with a hit that Mahomes took in the first quarter. He was tripped up and his head snapped off the ground on a play that he tried to scramble out of one of the many rushes he faced on Sunday night. Could the KC QB have been concussed on this play? He wasn't evaluated by the team or independent doctors and didn't go through any tests, but the question remains.

Super Bowl LIX a record breaker

It may not have been the closest Super Bowl we have ever seen, but that didn't keep Fox from breaking a record with 126 million viewers tuning in across all platforms. Between the Chiefs dynasty, a rematch against the Eagles, Saquon's show, Kendrick and Tom Brady on the call there were plenty of reasons for the whole world to tune in, and most of the world did.

Serena Williams backs Taylor Swift after boo-gate

Serena Williams has come out in defence of her pal, Taylor Swift, who was booed by large sections of the stadium when she appeared on the jumbotron in New Orleans. "I love you, don't listen to those booooo," the tennis superstar posted on X, using slightly dubious grammar.

Both ladies hogged the headlines for very different reasons at Super Bowl LIX.

Eagles dominate WSJ

Last night's Super Bowl win for Philadelphia dominates the front pages of newspapers (remember them) around the nation with even the very much financial focused Wall Street Journal giving over much of the front page to the Eagles heroics in New Orleans.

Are the Eagles "world" champions?

There's an interesting debate to be had here. It's relatively common to refer to the Super Bowl winners a 'world champions,' yet it's an exclusively American league. Maybe that international is imminent and we just don't know...

New Orleans Super Bowl lacking excitement !

According to sports business specialist Lev Akabas (Sportico), last night's New Orleans game was the second least exciting Super Bowl of the 21st century.

Only the Seahawks win over Denver in 2014 ranked highest as the least exciting.

Am sure this is not a complaint you'll get from the many green clad Eagles fans who are possibly a little 'tired & emotional' today after their win over the Chiefs.

Eagles rookie Cooper DeJean will never have a better birthday, I think we can say. Which is a bit sad, really, at just 22.

Taylor Swift lucky charm runs out for Chiefs

After Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got together before the start of the 2023 season, the Chiefs had been the dominant force in the NFL. The pop superstar had been a fairly regular attendee at games in Kansas City and beyond, and had been something of a good luck charm for Kelce and his teammates. Here's a little look at the Chiefs' record in front of Swift, which now isn't as good as it was...

Saquon Barkley's all-time NFL record

A little more on that Saquon Barkley record from our Calum. The Eagles star didn't have the chance to break the regular-season record after being rested in the last game, but it was all worth it in the end.

Jada Barkley, Super Bowl star

It's been quite the night for Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. The 28-year-old has won his first ever Super Bowl and broken the NFL record for most rushing yards in a season, including the playoffs. Now, he has official confirmation that he is daughter Jada's favorite player, and the whole world knows it. You just have to love these kinds of moments in sport, don't you?

as.com

Ladies and gentlemen, your Super Bowl LIX MVP, Jalen Hurts.

as.com

Life long Eagle Brandon Graham knew this was going to be his last season, and thought his playing days were over after tearing his tricep in Week 12, but he made a miraculous comeback and the Eagles kept on winning. He is going to retire as a Super Bowl champion after spending his entire career in Philly.

as.com

It's not easy being a coach in Philly. Nick Sirriani has had his ups and downs with Eagles fans, but he will be forever in their good graces after bringing the city Super Bowl No. 2. After the game he was on the field celebrating with his wife and two sons.

as.com

Nothing but love and respect between these two Super Bowl winning QBs. Hurts knew he was going to have to play a near perfect game to beat Mahomes. He did and so did his defense.

as.com

The Chiefs put a couple of consolation points up on the board in the 4th quarter, but they never had a chance. The two time defending champions were dethroned by a better team, that came out and dominated them from the very first play. Saquon Barkley only had 57 yards on 25 carries, but Hurts compensated rushing for 72 yards and hitting 17/22 passes for 221 yards, 2 TDs and 1 INT in his Super Bowl redemption game.

The Eagles are bringing the Lombardi Trophy home for the second time in franchise history, and they are doing it knowing they just beat the best team in football for the last few years. There is a new best team in football, and Philly fans are about to hit Bourbon Street hard before heading back to the City of Brotherly Love.

as.com

The play after the turnover on downs, the Eagles could have run some clock and looked to make it a five score game after chewing up some clock but they went for the kill. Hurts took a deep shot to DeVonta Smith for a 46 yard bomb that was the nail in the coffin.

as.com

KC's offense was simply non existent for the first three quarters. They knew they had to get points coming out of the halftime break and Philly had an answer for everything they threw at them.

as.com

A couple plays after the Baun pick, Jalen Hurts hit AJ Brown for the walk in touchdown to send the Eagles into the halftime break up 24-0. Brown had a fiery conversation with his coach Nick Sirriani the series before this, but it was all love for Philly after the Eagles took a commanding lead in the 2nd quarter. Brown would be one of the ones showering his coach in Gatorade at the end of the game, so it's safe to say the hatchet has been buried.

as.com

Down 17-0 late in the first half, the Chiefs knew they needed to gets something going before the break, but Mahomes was picked off for a second time in a first half that the Chiefs totaled less than 30 yards. The Eagles had Mahomes under pressure all game long, sacking him a career high six times. The craziest thing about that is that the Eagles didn't blitz once. It was all the front four that kept the Chiefs QB under constant pressure like on this play that turned into a pick.

as.com

After Philly kicked a field goal to stretch the lead to 10-0, Mahomes was pressured out of the pocket and made a mistake that was way out of character for the three time Super Bowl MVP. The Eagles had him running for his life all night, and this time rookie and birthday boy Cooper DeJean picked off Mahomes and took it to the house.

as.com

The only mistake that Hurts and the Eagles for that matter made was this interception to start the second quarter. He was picked off by Bryan Cook, but the Chiefs couldn't do anything with the possession after the turnover and that was really the story of the night.

as.com

The leader in rushing TDs over the last two years dialed up his own number from the one yard line and gave Philly a lead they would hang on to for the rest of the night. The run game never really got going, but it didn't need to. Hurts was incredible passing the ball and the defense dominated.

as.com

The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl Champions for the second time in franchise history. They were going up against the dynasty of this decade, the power house of this generation and the dominated the Kansas City Chiefs from start to finish. Jalen Hurts was almost perfect in a game that the Eagles had in hand before the halftime break.

Hurts and the Eagles got on the board first and never looked back. After punting on the opening possession, Jalen hit Jahan Dotson on what looked to be the first TD of Super Bowl LIX, but the WR was marked down at the one, and everyone in New Orleans knew what was coming.

as.com

This 24-0 defecit is the most Patrick Mahomes has ever been down in his career. They get the ball to start the 3rd quarter and they need points in a hurry. Can KC make this a game? Or will Philly continue to dominate?

as.com

Kendrick just killed it. Absolutely killed the halftime. Having said that, SZA stole the show. I might be biased. I love me some SZA.

as.com

The Eagles front four has been the story of the game. They sacked Mahomes three times but got to him countless other times and the Chiefs QB is just 6/14 for 33 yards and has thrown two picks as a direct result of the PHI pressure.

Saquon Barkey only has 31 yards rushing on 12 carries, but Jalen Hurts has been money so far. He is 11/15 for 123 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. The Eagles lead 24-0 and have been in complete control. Mahomes has not looked himself tonight. He has been constantly under pressure from the PHI front four and that has led to some errant throws. None was worse than this one that was picked off by the rookie and birthday boy Cooper DeJean who took it to the house!

as.com

Just about the only thing the Chiefs have done well tonight was the interception from Cook, but KC couldn't do anything with the ball after the turnover. KC have no points, and just 23 yards after 30 minutes of play.

as.com

Hurts and the Eagles went to their bread and butter on short yardage situations and punched it in from a yard out with a tush push to take the lead that they have only built on since then.

as.com

After a couple of punts from each team to start the game, the Eagles looked like they got into the end zone with this connection from Hurts to Dotson. After review the TD was taken off the board, but they got the ball at the 1 yard line. You know what that means.

Mahomes was eyeing three-peat 12 months ago

It didn’t take long for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs to start thinking about making a run for the historic three-peat. In the moments after lifting the Lombardi Trophy for the second straight year, Patrick Mahomes was already talking about this team doing something that no other team in the history of the league has done. If they do get the three-peat, they would be in a category of their own and the debates would start to open up: is this the best team ever? The New England Patriots won six Super Bowls, but they did it over a span of 20 years. With a fourth title in six years, and the three-peat on their resume, you could certainly make a case for them. Not to mention, Patrick Mahomes has about another decade before he starts to mull retirement, which is going to leave the door open for him and the Chiefs to get to six, or more.

T Swift is KC's good luck charm?

You either love her or you hate her, but one thing is for sure. You are going to see he in the luxury boxes of Chiefs game. Taylor Swift has brought new breed of fans to the NFL, particularly Chiefs Kingdom. The cross culture of the sports and pop worlds has been fantastic for the Chiefs and for the NFL, but has also given those who can’t stand the Chiefs ammunition to hate them more. The Chiefs won’t mind one bit considering they have won 31 of their 38 games since Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce went public and Swift was in the box of the Chiefs vs. Bears game in Week 3 of last year. We aren’t going to say she’s the lucky charm for the Chiefs because KC’s dynasty started long before the Swifties jumped on board, but T-Swift has brought a new type of fame and a new dynamic than we have seen in dynasties past.

Refs on KC's side?

Like all dynasties before them the Chiefs have gained a lot of new fans over the course of the last six years, but they have also made a lot of enemies on the way. When you win so much and create that ill will people start to suspect external help that may or may not be merited. There is a large portion of Chiefs haters that have pointed at the refs for being responsible for some if not all of the Chiefs success. It all goes back to that iffy holding call against the Eagles late in Super Bowl LIII. On 3rd an 8 with under 2:00 to go, the call gave the Chiefs a chance to run the clock out and win the game on a last second field goal to topple the Eagles. Since then there have been some other calls that could or could not have been called. Last year there were a few holding calls on crucial plays that were not called on the Chiefs. In this playoff run the Texans had a gripe on a couple of roughing the passer penalties that turned into points for the Chiefs as Houston claimed Patrick Mahomes was being overly protected. Then in the Bills game the 4th and 1 stop by the KC defense was suspicious to say the best. It looked like Josh Allen got the first down on the replay but after review the call on the field stood and the Chiefs ended up winning the game.

Chiefs holding on in tight games

The Kansas City Chiefs have become experts in winning tight, closely contested games over the course of this season. It started with the Chiefs narrow win over the Ravens in Week 1 and that was a preview of what was to come for the rest of the season. Twelve of their 15 wins during the regular season came within a touchdown or less, and they are coming off of a win over the Bills that was decided by a late field goal from Harrison Butker. It hasn’t always been pretty for the Chiefs this year, but they know how to win when the game is on the line. That can largely be attributed to their three time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes who makes all the right plays at all the right times, and their stingy defense that comes up with late game saving stops like they didi against Buffalo in the AFC Championship. This game is projected to be a tight one in the eyes of the odds makers, so you wouldn’t bet against the Chiefs if this game goes down to the wire.

Lomardi is in the house

It’s what every team who starts the season in OTA’s and through the preseason into Week 1 and the rest of the regular season strives to end the season holding. The Lombraid Trophy is one of the most legendary trophies in sports, and the history behind it is fascinating. The trophy, which was drawn up on a cocktail napkin during a lunch between NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle and Tiffany & Co. president Oscar Reider, has been the highest prize in the league since 1967. The first team to win the Lombardi Trophy was fittingly the Green Bay Packers who beat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I. The 22 inch tall, 7 pound trophy has been presented after every Super Bowl since, with the New England Patriots hoisting it more than any other team.

Injury report: Chiefs

The Chiefs started this week with a few players on the injury report, one of those was Patrick Mahomes just to give KC fans a minor skip of the heartbeat, but we all know the No. 12 is playing on Super Sunday. Punter Matt Ariza and tackle Jawaan Taylor were also on the list, but they are set to play in Super Bowl LIX. The only question the Chiefs have is around their WR Skyy Moore who is battling an abdomen injury and is listed as doubtful after being limited in practice all week.

Philly hero as big a Rocky could return for Super Bowl

Graham activated of Super Bowl LIX

One of the Philadelphia’s heroes of Super Bowl LII and life long Eagle Brandon Graham is going to make his dramatic return to action tonight after tearing his bicep in Week 12 of the regular season. Graham is an icon in the City of Brotherly Love but suffered the injury in what has already been declared his last season of his career. It looked like his playing days were over, but after a remarkable recovery and an Eagles run to Super Sunday, it looks like he will be suiting up in a Philadelphia uniform one last time. How much he will play remains to be seen, but just having him dressed out will be a big emotional boost for the already stacked Eagles defense. Graham was officially activated from the injured reserve on Friday and should be suited up on Sunday.

Injury report: Eagles

Speaking of players who may or may not be playing in Super Bowl LIX, the Philadelphia Eagles only have one player confirmed to be out for the title game and that is Britain Covey who is out with a neck injury. There are three others who listed as questionable including offensive lineman Nick Gates, EDGE Brandon Graham and TE C.J. Uzomah. Graham and Uzomah were full participants in practice on Friday while Gates was limited in his participation. Gates is a huge part of the pass and run protection on the O Line, so Philly fans will be hoping that he can play in the biggest game of the season.

New Orleans Super Bowls of year's past

Super Bowl LIX will be the 11th title game held in the Big Easy. For a game that has only been played 59 times that’s not a bad return for the city by the Bayou. It makes sense when you consider the climate this time of year, and the surround activities that are awfully conducive for the week long lead up to the big game. The Super Bowl, as we know isn’t just a game. There are parties and celebrations and events all throughout the week, so why not have the Super Bowl in a city that never passes up the chance to have a good time. The first Super Bowl played in New Orleans took place back in 1970 for Super Bowl IV. Funnily enough Kansas City won that game for their first Super Bowl title ever. They beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 from Tulane Stadium. The last Super Bowl that was played in New Orleans was the Harbaugh Bowl between the Niners and the Ravens back in 2013. Baltimore topped San Francisco in what was a memorable game that included a blackout that stopped the game for about a half hour.

Why does Heat president Pat Riley want the Chiefs to win Super Bowl LIX

Riley rooting for Chiefs from South Beach

The Miami Heat’s minority owner, president and former legendary coach Pat Riley will be watching Super Bowl LIX with a vested interest. He may not be a Chiefs fan all the time, but on Sunday he will certainly be pulling for Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce an the rest of Chiefs Kingdom. While Byron Scott of the LA Lakers teams from the 80s was the one who came up with the “three-peat” phrase, Pat Riley was smart enough to trademark the term and since then he has been reeling in the dough whenever a team wins three titles in a row. The Lakers fell short in the year that Scott coined the phrase, but since the The Chicago Bulls, the LA Lakers and the New York Yankees have rattled off three titles in a row, and Riley has been cashing in on merchandise that uses the

Surprising facts about three-peats and professional sports teams that have won 3 times in a row

Previous three-peat tries

The elusive three-peat has been achieved before, just never in the NFL. The Packers did so before the Super Bowl era began and their Super Bowl I win counted towards their three-peat dating back to when they won the final two NFL Championships, but since then no one has been able to do so. Since then eight teams have gone back-to-back but none of those teams got to the Super Bowl in their three-peat run. The New England Patriots were the last to come close at the turn of the century, but the Chiefs are the first ones flirt with the back-to-back-to-back milestone in over two decades. It has been done in the NBA a few times and in soccer a couple times, but never in the NFL. Our Calum Roche has more.

Hurts' chance to join iconci shortlist

Barkley isn’t the only one on the verge of making NFL history. Jalen Hurts has a chance to join one of the most iconic quarterback shortlists in football. If he and the Eagles can manage to beat the Chiefs, the Philly QB would be just the third quarterback to win the College Football National Championship and the Super Bowl. It hasn’t happened since the 80s when Joe Montana became the second player to win at both levels winning with the San Francisco 49ers in 1981 after leading Notre Dame to the title in college. Joe Namath was the first quarterback to do so winning the National Championship with Alabama and then the Super Bowl with the New York Jets back in the 60s. Like Namath, Hurts won the national title with Alabama in 2017 and now he in back in the Super Bowl with another chance to not just join an elite list of football legends, but more importantly lift his first Lombardi Trophy.

Barkley's run for the record

History can be made by Philly running back Saquon Barkley who came up just short of breaking the all-time single season rushing record set by Eric Dickerson back in 1984. With his 2,005 yards in the regular season (having sat out the 17th game of the season), he became the 9th player to rush for 2,000 yards. Since the playoffs began Barkley has been even better. He ran all over the Rams and the Commanders in the last two games and now he is just 29 yards away from breaking Terrell Davis’ all time rushing record that includes the regular season and the playoffs. Davis went on to win the Super Bowl in that record breaking season and now Barkley can not only break the former Broncos’ record but also has a shot at winning the Super Bowl from New Orleans on Sunday. The way Barkley has been playing he might break the record on his first touch of the game.

Last Super Bowl between these two teams

The last Super Bowl matchup between these two teams was one of the most dramatic, high scoring games we have ever seen on the Super Bowl stage. Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts went toe-to-toe in a heavyweight battle that featured 74 points. Philly controlled the first 30 minutes, keeping the Chiefs at an arms distance and going into the halftime break up 24-14 after two rushing TDs and a passing TD from Jalen Hurts. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs came out hot in the second half, scoring TDs on their first three possessions out of the break and taking a 35-27 lead. Philly tied the game up with a Jalen Hurts TD run, his third of the game and a two pt. conversion he ran in to draw level with KC with just over 5:00 to go. The Chiefs would drive the ball into field goal range, and facing a 3rd and 8 with 1:54 to go a defensive holding flag against Philly would allow KC to run the clock down and set up the game winning field goal that was made by Harrison Butker to give the Chiefs their second Super Bowl of this era, and the first of a potential three-peat.

Donald Trump’s Super Bowl prediction, as he chooses between Mahomes and Hurts

President Trump’s take

The President of the United States never holds back from giving his opinion, and with tonight’s big game about to kick off the nation wants to know who Donald Trump is taking? As always he was very diplomatic in his answer, but in the end he told the world who he thinks is going to come out of Super Bowl LIX hoisting the Lomabrdi Trophy. Will he go with Saquon and the Eagles or Mahomes and the Chiefs? Our David Nelson has more.

Star watch: Chiefs

You can’t talk about the Chiefs, or their dynasty without talking about Patrick Mahomes. He is the star of the show even though the offense has maybe not been as explosive as they have been in the early years of this dynasty. It’s true that this is a much more balanced team, and they rely much more on the strength of their defense but when the Chiefs need a big play it’s always Mahomes making the big plays. His numbers were far from spectacular and miles away from leading the league, but Mahomes knows exactly when he needs to make plays, and more importantly he knows how to avoid mistakes that wind up costing you wins in one possession games.

Star watch: Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles boosted their offense this offseason, brining in a familiar foe from within the division. We knew Saquon Barkley was good, but we never got to see how good he really was on a Giants team that never surrounded him with enough talent for him to flourish. It didn’t take long for the Eagles to see how good Barkley was. He went for 109 yards and 2 TDs in the first game of the season down in Sao Paolo and he didn’t slow down after that. He would go on to break the Eagles’ single season rushing record and has been sensational in the playoffs. He is the difference maker for this Eagles team, and they will be hoping that having the league’s best running back will be the missing ingredient that they needed to knock off the Chiefs and bring the Super Bowl title back to the City of Brotherly Love.

Season recap: Eagles

After a late season collapse last year the Eagles made changes at defensive and offensive coordinator, but really the biggest change they made was brining in a former divisional foe, Saquon Barkley during free agency. After a 2-2 start to the season things really weren’t certain in the City of Brotherly Love. Nick Sirianni had a spat with Eagles fans and the boat was on rocky waters to say the least. They would right the ship and win 10 and 12 of their next 13 to end the regular season with the two seed in the NFC. They shut down the Packers in Philly before just edging out the Rams in a tight game from Lincoln Financial Field and then wax Washington to get to their fifth Super Bowl in franchise history.

Season recap: Chiefs

The Chiefs didn’t take take long to start setting their sights on a three-peat following last year’s Super Bowl win in Las Vegas over the San Francisco 49ers. Patrick Mahomes was already talking about making history in the post game pressers, and this season the Chiefs aren’t just talking a big game, they have backed it up. They started the season against the Ravens in a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship, and won that be the length of Isiah Likely’s toe. That would set a trend for the Chiefs who would make a habit of winning tight, one score games. Last second field goals, last second blocked field goals and late game winning plays made by Patrick Mahomes became the norm for the Chiefs who won their first nine games before losing to the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park. They would win their next six and wrap up the one seed in the AFC earning home field and a first round bye. Neither playoff game was easy but KC was able to fend off the Texans and the Bills to reach Super Sunday for the fifth time in the last six years.

Last game: Chiefs

It was the matchup we have seen so many times over the last few years in the AFC playoffs. Josh Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes. Bills vs. Chiefs. Contenders vs. Champions. The Bills went into Arrowhead after already having beat the Chiefs in Buffalo earlier in the season, but this time it was different. This time it was in KC, with Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs, and the Chiefs did what the Chiefs do in the postseason. Mahomes and the Chiefs came out swinging taking a 21-10 lead over Buffalo but Allen and the Bills would come charging back to take a 22-21 lead in the third quarter. Down by one with the Bills driving KC’s defense came up with a massive stop on 4th and 1 to take possession back and Patrick Mahomes led his team down the field and ran a TD in from 10 yards out to take a 7 point lead early in the 4th quarter. Allen and the Bills would respond with a TD drive to tied up the game with 6:15 to go, but the Chiefs retook the lead with a Harrison Bunker field goal with 3:00 left on the clock. That was plenty of time for Allen and the Bills to try and tie or take the lead but the Chiefs defense did what they have done all year. They protected the lead and escaped with a three point win to make it to their third straight Super Bowl and fifth in six years.

Last game: Eagles

After a surprising run to to the NFC Championship, the Washington Commanders met a Philadelphia team who may have played their best game in their most important game to that point of the season. Saquon Barkley stunned the Commanders with a TD run on this first touch of the game and the Eagles didn’t slow down until the clock hit all zeros. It wasn’t just Barkley that dominated Washington. The defense kept Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels contained and Jalen Hurts did what Jalen Hurts does best. He controlled the game, passing for 248 yards and a TD, while running for another 3 TDs to match Barkley’s hat trick of touchdowns. Philly were never in danger of losing control of the game against the Commanders and they cruised to their second Super Bowl in the last three seasons.

We are live from the Caesar's Super Dome!

Hello everyone and welcome to New Orleans where we have a rematch of one of the best Super Bowls ever. Two years ago these two teams met in what turned out to be the second highest scoring title game ever, and now the Eagles are back at Super Sunday looking to keep the Chiefs from winning their third straight Lombardi Trophy. The Chiefs came into their back-to-back title defense with the bulls eye on their backs and took everyones best shot, but still finished with the best record in the league and now they are a win away from making history. While the Chiefs finished the regular season with the best record, the Eagles have looked like the most balanced team in the league. They can beat you in a number of ways, but the most spectacular and usually the most common way is with their franchise record holder for rushing yards in a season, Saquon Barkley. Tonight the dynasty of this decade takes on NFC best team with the Lombardi Trophy on the line.
